Explain
Complaint to the Secretary of State for Education
The Secretary of State for Education has powers to step in about a council or the governing body of a maintained school. This is when it is acting unreasonably, or is not carrying out a duty under the Education Act 1996. For this purpose, that Act includes Part 3 of the Children and Families Act 2014. A parent or young person can complain to the Department for Education and ask it to use these powers. The Department decides whether to act, and the Act sets no time limit. It does not decide individual appeals.
